In the mean streets of Hobarts inner suburbs an artist navigates through alleys and public spaces. Fascinated by the patinated surfaces of windows and walls that have been coated and recoated by generations of dwellers she embraces the life of the city.

Sarah Stewart is back from a sojourn on Bruny Island where her eye for abstraction turned to vistas across sandflats and beach. She mapped her paths through the bush and the seaside blocks with an elegantly scribed line above re-erased and reapplied grounds. Poetic and personal, her responses to nature spoke of a sensitive intellect in a very rural setting.

Back in town the urban streetscape has variety and complexity. In the series Windows Sarah introduces a temporal theme, taking us for a stroll noting the windows we pass, our footsteps matching the rhythm of the windows. The Hood sums up her new neighbourhood, no longer trees and marinas but noise and bustle in a richly diverse, historic streetscape.
