Greg King’s career began as an apprentice jeweller in 1987 in Hobart under Chilean Master Jeweller Claudio A. Pavez. In his first year he was awarded the Australian Jewellers Association Design Award.
Working as a commercial jeweller in Launceston he attended the University of Tasmania for a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in Jewellery and Metalsmithing. Here he studied under Ray Norman, a major contributor to contemporary jewellery in Australia and responsible for a number of international jewellers visiting Australia through the influence of his Mittagong workshop.
Under Ray Norman’s guidance Greg worked as an Undergraduate Assistant in the School of Arts Jewellery and Metalsmithing workshop. This allowed him to expand his exposure to contemporary jewellery making, changing his view of the nature of body adornment.
Greg King strives to make pieces in response to his internal and external environment. As such they range from forms that are simple and whimsical to heavily textured pieces inspired by the organic world.
