Jaclyn Poke is a contemporary landscape painter living on the coast at Wynyard in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian landscape is unique. Thickly wooded hillsides, crystal clear waters and blue skies are not far away from urban Tasmania. In three hours you can travel from top to bottom of the island and see the Derwent River valley and the dry plains of the Midlands.
On the Coast near Wynyard where Jaclyn Poke has her studio is Bass Strait bordering rich farmland. Just South are deep forests where a complex visual pattern of Eucalyptus softens the old hills. This is the subject for an artist whose chromatic mark making is an ode to natural abundance. An art therapist , Jaclyn Poke instructs her students in repetitive mark making and its possibilities for mindfulness. By leaving the conscious mind behind and connecting the hand making an accretion of landscape symbols the artist communicates her calm to the viewer.
This body of work shows a transition from a style bordering realism with colour and surface grounded in observed reality to playful lyrical abstraction where non local colour dances on the canvas. The artist shows how nature is her passion and refuge in these rhythmic and joyous works
