One of my preoccupations of recent years has been the idea of overlapping eras or timelines that in this instance was triggered witnessing The Lady Nelson and Windeward Bound out on the Derwent last year.

I was intrigued by the site of sailing ships on Hobart waters in 2023.

Hampered by witnessing this from a distance I was unable to gather direct visual reference.

What followed was research about the history of the original ships and their subsequent recent rebuilding as exact replicas of the originals.  I also amassed a great deal of visual reference to realise this composition.

I had for some time had a feeling I wanted to incorporate a sailing vessel in a painting as an extension of my other love of and continuing relevance of 19th century landscape and marine painting and how that resonates with me within a present day Tasmanian context.

This painting is a culmination of several of these preoccupations and predilections. Keith Lane

A painting for those who like a contemporary seascape bearing in mind that time and aesthetics are not completely linear. BN
