In this second exhibition with Nolan Gallery, virtuoso watercolourist Evelyn Antonysen explores the broad sweep of the Tasmanian landscape. Using limited means (and her favourite hake brushes) her gestural marks express how it is to walk up a sandy track and suddenly be awed by the vast azure horizontal expanse of the coast. Influenced by the tradition of Sumi E ink painting, the interplay of pigment and handmade paper is given “bones” by the foreground dark ink applied with bamboo. Evelyn’s interpretations of the Tasmanian landscape are in collections all around the world.
