Finding the way home in the dark – Stewart

‘Finding the way home in the dark’ was painted at a time when I was feeling a little dark, as if I’d lost my way a bit. I wanted to express this state of mind and emotion in a painting, and intuitively reached for black paint. But painting with black soon became boring, and I started to crave relief from its unimaginative and cold relentlessness. As I began to let the light in, gradations of greys and touches of colour emerged, until eventually, lit by a newfound clarity, the path home to a lighter, warmer place became visible.
